Episode 1: My Journey to Balanced Blood Sugar and Better Health
Welcome to “The Balanced Blood Sugar Podcast”! I’m Adrienne Wheat, a Registered Nurse, and today, I’m so excited to share our story with you of how all of this began. It’s a deeply personal story — one that started with my mom’s health journey and has completely transformed how I look at wellness.
Like many of you, I’ve seen firsthand how blood sugar issues can impact day-to-day life. For me, it started with my mom. Because her health was a constant struggle for her. She was dealing with fluctuating blood sugar and insulin levels, and it was taking a toll on her energy, her mood, her mental health, her weight, her pain, and her overall quality of life. It was so hard to watch someone I loved go through all of that and feel so hopeless.
If you’ve ever been in a situation where you or someone you care about is dealing with health challenges, you know how overwhelming it can feel. She was given all sorts of advice — some of it conflicting, some of it confusing — and none of it seemed to be making a lasting difference. And she had been doing all the “right” things! So when she was told that she needed to get ready to go on dialysis, she knew that she had to find a better way to manage her health. She was determined to find a better way - beyond quick fixes and temporary solutions. She started focusing on real, sustainable change and researching out the wazoo.
The Turning Point: A New Approach
That was the first major turning point for us. The second was when my mom started taking her blood sugar numbers more often. She began to recognize patterns and realize that certain foods were causing spikes in numbers. So she started messing with her diet based on her blood sugar levels to find what foods worked her.
It would be a while until we realized and truly understood the importance of balanced blood sugar, and learned that high blood sugar is like a hail storm in your body. But all of this isn’t just about carbs or sugars — it’s about how the food we eat, the way we move, and even our mindset can have a big impact on how our body functions.
One of the first things we both did was focus on simple dietary changes. I’m talking about real, whole foods — cutting out processed stuff and bringing in more nutrient-dense meals, one step at a time. For my mom, this meant changing her snacks. At first, it was tough. Old habits die hard, and we weren’t perfect every day. But we started to see small shifts. Her energy improved, her pain decreased, her mood was more stable, she felt more stable throughout the day, and slowly but surely, we saw those numbers — you know the ones I’m talking about — start to balance out. To make a long story short, she never had to go on dialysis. She was able to stop her insulin shots. And she even dropped several sizes of clothing.
This was a revelation for us. It wasn’t some complicated, impossible-to-follow regimen. It was about making small, manageable adjustments, one step at a time, and that’s when I realized: if my mom could do this, so could so many other people who want to improve their overall health.
What I Learned About Wellness
Through this experience, we both became fascinated by how the body works — how certain foods, habits, and even sleep patterns influence things like hormones, mood, energy, and focus. We dove into research and started applying what we were learning on a deeper level into our own lives. And the more we explored, the more we realized that everyone, not just those facing specific health challenges, could benefit from these principles. So I began implementing them for my husband and I to prepare us for our fertility journey. And my mom began teaching my dad and grandma and even her friends and doctor.
Now, we realized how powerful it is to stabilize blood sugar for better health — not just for energy but for mental clarity, emotional balance, and overall well-being. It isn’t just about what my mom was dealing with; it’s about improving quality of life for everyone.
Challenges Along the Way
Now, I won’t pretend this was an easy road. There were definitely challenges. As anyone who’s tried to make a major lifestyle change knows, the hardest part can be sticking with it when results aren’t immediate. We hit some bumps — days when we fell off track, felt discouraged, or just didn’t see the changes we hoped for right away. But one of the biggest lessons we learned was that small steps and consistency over time is what matters.
This is something I want to emphasize for all of you listening: change doesn’t happen overnight. It’s about the small steps. Whether you’re trying to have more energy, feel more focused, or just feel better in your own skin, it all adds up over time.
Why This Podcast Matters
So why am I sharing all of this with you? Because I believe that everyone deserves to feel their best. You don’t have to be dealing with any specific issue to benefit from stabilizing your blood sugar, especially because the estimated undiagnosed blood sugar problems in the USA is huge. So there is a very good chance you’ll benefit from learning to stabilize your blood sugar a little bit better. Whether it’s having more energy to play with your kids, being more productive at work, or just waking up feeling refreshed and ready for the day, the tips I’ll share in this podcast can make a difference for everyone.
Throughout this podcast, we’ll talk about simple, practical ways to make small shifts in your daily habits to bring more wellness to life. But please remember, I’m not your personal nurse, but I am here to provide general advice and routine education that can help you feel empowered in your wellness journey. Just be sure to consult with your healthcare provider before making any changes.
